Sage Smudging information
The use of dried white sage has been dated to well over 2,000 years old. smudging is considered an Indigenous American practice. The shamans used dried sage plants on their fires as a ritual of calling upon ancestral spirits. Any conflict, anger, illness or evil was absorbed by the sage smoke to be released or cleansed from the energy field of a person or space.
Some ideal (or necessary) times to sage smudge your aura and/or space would be:
- When you move into a new living space
- When you begin a new job or start your own business
- Before and after a guest enters your home
- Before and after a yoga or healing session
- Before meditation
- After an argument or any illness
- Upon returning home from crowded situations
Studies have been done that suggest that the burning of Incense and/ or Sage can have an antiseptic effect on stagnant air, meaning that many of the chemical components of the smoke itself act to kill harmful bacteria and airborne pathogens. In effect, the "cleansing" is more than just a ceremonial and spiritual one, but can have physical implications as well.
How To Smudge:
- Step 1: Obtain Sage
You can find sage at local Metaphysical stores, Yoga Studios, Wiccan/pagan bookstores, and some healing arts centers. Native Visions carries our own Native Grown White sage that is pre-bundled- Or, if you have a sage plant, you can make your own — just bundle and tie it, and then hang upside down in cool dark space until it is completely dried out.
- Step 2: Light Your Sage
Place it on any heat-proof burning surface like an Abalone Shell — a traditional vessel used by Indigenous American people that represents the element of water. Carefully open the bundle of sage and leave loose sage at the bottom of the shell. Light the sage and blow out the flame. You may have to re-light the sage a few times during the ritual process. If you are using a charcoal burning disk inside of a censor or small cauldron, you can place the loose sage on top and mix it with different resins and incense. There have been arguments raised as to the use of a "natural" bowl, but use what you feel will work best for you.
- Step 3: Cleanse
Once you have a nice smoke going, use you hand or a feather to direct the smoke over your body from your feet up to your head, then back down again. As you do this, visualize the smoke taking away with it any negative energy from your life and space; any darkness, or malevolence.
Make sure to open all windows to ensure proper air flow while also providing pathways for the negative energy to leave.
