Squash Blossom

The inverted crescent pendant on squash-blossom necklaces, called the 'Naja and  is found in various design forms throughout the world cultures. The Navajo word for the “squash blossom” bead is yo ne maze disya gi, which means simply “bead that spreads out.”- Originally the crescent shape came from the European migration to North America, there it became popularized by the Native American adoption of the design with the addition of turquoise and local silver.  Though the attempt is made to associate the Squash Blossom with crop fertility, it is a decision of aesthetics and ornamentation for the tribes like the Zuni and the Navajo who continue to craft these beautiful Necklaces.
